Rome 2008 HD video (RS & KU audio mix)

Update: Thanks to Xuan, there's now a torrent for this.

"This isn't circulating on The Cure boards, I can guarantee it's by far the best quality video of the Rome 2008 4:13 Dream premiere show you'll find anywhere. It's an alternative camera angle version to the commonly circulated complete version, the audio of this alternate version is also remixed by Robert Smith and Keith Uddin. The quality is far superior to anything that's previously been shared on The Cure boards, it's a 720p High Definition, .mkv file about 4.3GB. It's all of 4:13 Dream (except Sirensong, The Real Snow White, This Here And Now With You)."

CC & RS - 'Not In Love' update

There will be a new Robert Smith mix of 'Not In Love' released Dec. 12th. You can hear a sample of it at Amazon UK. There will also be a 12" vinyl version released in January, though I'm not sure if both versions of the song will be included. The regular radio version is available now at Amazon US and iTunes US.

Update: The tracks are now available at Amazon UK and iTunes UK, but the RS remix is not available outside of the UK right now. Hope the other stores get it added soon.

Update 2: If you are buying from outside of the UK, you can get it at the War Child Music Store. If that link doesn't work, try this and then search for the track. (Thanks BH)

Remastered 'Killing An Arab' found?

As most of you know, and for whatever reason, 'Killing An Arab' was not included on the remastered 'Three Imaginary Boys' CD in 2004. But Vikk may have found the remastered version on 'The Best of The Cure' CD, which was released in 2009 by Universal Music Lebanon. Take a listen and see what you think. Is that our missing track? (Thanks Vikk)

Update: Actually, this was released in the Ukraine by Moon Records, as discovered by the excellent thecurerecords.com. (Thanks JC)

Further clarification from Robert

Posted in the comments at the official site: "I HOPED MY BESTIVAL COMMENT WAS CLEAR ENOUGH..."AS OF DECEMBER 3RD 2010, THIS IS THE ONLY CURE PERFORMANCE OF ANY DESCRIPTION BOOKED FOR 2011". BUT TO BE EVEN CLEARER...WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING ROCK IN RIO. WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING LOLLAPALOOZA CHILE. WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING A LONDON SHOW IN THE SPRING... ETC ETC... IF THERE ARE TO BE ANY OTHER CURE LIVE PERFORMANCES IN 2011, THEY WILL BE ANNOUNCED HERE FIRST... ANYTHING ELSE ANYWHERE ELSE IS AS EVER MERE SPECULATION! TO GO...RSX"

Songwords (Expanded) for iPad

"I purchased an iPad many months ago and have loved reading books on it, I figured it would be great to make an ePub of Cure lyrics, so I developed the attached ePub that I've dubbed Songwords (Expanded)." (Thanks Nick)

Wear your Cure shirts today

BBC 6 Music is doing their Wear Your Old Band T-shirt To Work Day today, and a couple of Cure shirts have made it in to the gallery. Here's Benj - front/back (wearing one of my all-time favorite Cure shirts) and Timothy proudly wearing their shirts today. (Thanks Benj)

Bestival statement from Robert

Robert has posted this comment at the official site:
"creeeeeak... AS OF DECEMBER 3RD 2010, THIS IS THE ONLY CURE PERFORMANCE OF ANY DESCRIPTION BOOKED FOR 2011... WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY OTHER EUROPEAN FESTIVALS, AND UNLESS SOMETHING REMARKABLE HAPPENS, WE WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY OTHER EUROPEAN SHOWS! THIS IS AS CLEAR AND AS DEFINITE AS WE CAN BE... SO IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE 120+ MINUTES OF THE CURE NEXT YEAR (AS WELL AS A DAZZLING PANOPLY OF OTHER GREAT ACTS) WE WOULD STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GO TO BESTIVAL! (HOWEVER, IF YOU LIVE IN SOUTH AMERICA, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER WAITING A WHILE BEFORE BOOKING YOUR TICKET... YOU NEVER KNOW... ) ONWARDS! RSX"

Entreat Plus marble vinyl unpack movie

Just so they can rub the salt in the wounds of all North American fans. Bastards. : )

Cure play Bestival 2011!

The Cure have announced that they will be headlining Bestival on Sept. 10th, 2011. It is being billed as their only European show of 2011 (actually, Robert's quote says "only European festival show"). Tickets are available now. Not a rumor, not a dream, The Cure are playing live again! Thanks for the early Christmas present, RS!
BBC 6 Music has an interview with Rob Da Bank about the show.

Update: About that "only European show in 2011" vs. "only European festival show in 2011" bit - "I’ve asked the promoter to clarify that. RS signed off the press release as it is but he may have overlooked the discrepancy so I’ll let you know once he comes back to me."

And about single day tickets - "There aren’t any plans at the moment to sell day tickets this year but have asked the promoter to confirm that, again once he comes back to me then you’ll be the first to know." (Thanks Aidan)

Rumor: Cure play Rock en Seine Aug. 2011

Update: Looks like we can officially mark this one as wishful thinking/dreaming.

Happy (Vegan/Vegetarian) Thanksgiving! Here's something else to be thankful for...the first rumored live date for 2011 (translated from Zegut):

"In the last week of August 2011, the Park lands of St. Cloud, I'll see on the Main Stage of the Rock en Seine, Foo Fighters, The Strokes. And then I had a vision of a crow on acid, The Cure. As usual, all such statements self-destroy in 5 seconds, and I deny having written anything."

Just a rumor, and nothing confirmed just yet, so please don't buy tickets to the show based on this. Can any of our French friends help with this? How reliable is this blog? Does it sound like this is just a wish, or saying he's leaking real info that he has?
(Thanks Calmin)

Andy Samberg as Robert Smith on SNL

(Thanks Aaron)

On tonight's episode of Saturday Night Live (Anne Hathaway hosting), Andy Samberg played Robert Smith in the "Horse Play Soundtrack" sketch. If you recorded it and want to get right to it, it was the final sketch of the show, after the 2nd song from Florence and the Machine. And I'm sure it will be up at NBC, Hulu, or YouTube soon.

Early release for Entreat Plus vinyl

IGA has updated the official site with details on a Dec. 6th release for the Entreat Plus vinyl at the Universal store.

Note: "This a strictly limited and numbered edition that is only available from the Universal Cure store. Each disc is manufactured with its own unique pattern: no two discs are identical. The marble effect pattern on the vinyl is not printed but is created as part of a manufacturing process which means every disc will display a unique marbling effect, with the colours chosen to be sympathetic to the front cover artwork."

This appears to be unavailable to North American fans, most likely due to Elektra/Rhino having the rights in this region (Elektra/Rhino is releasing it here, not Universal), though that's only a guess at this time.

Steven Severin interview

Left Lion has an interview with Steven Severin, and there were a couple of Cure/Glove questions asked:

There were once rumours that you were asked to join The Cure; is this true? Is this something you would contemplate if you were asked now or are you happier when doing your own thing?
There is no truth in the rumour, at all. Robert would never ask. Why would Simon leave?

Would you ever work with Robert Smith again? Maybe a second The Glove album?
We've talked about it and Robert says "It's just a matter of time". Making space for it means effectively shutting down the Cure for 6 to 9 months. That's a huge machine with many people depending on it for their livelihoods so timing is key. One day, I hope. (Thanks Paul K)

Update: Slicing Up Eyeballs and CoS picked up the story.

Ross still making things difficult

Our old "friend" Ross Robinson, producer of 'The Cure', is still up to his old tricks. This time, even Korn are finding him tough to work with. (Thanks JC)

For those of you not around in 2004, Simon (and a few others in the band) felt the same way about Ross: "'He'd come in and he'd start throwing things around,'' Gallup recalls with annoyance. ''He didn't like us when we played note perfect. He wanted more passion, so he'd actually come up, and if I was trying to play note perfect he'd slam his hands across the bass. More than once he nearly got the bass sideways in his mouth. You couldn't leave the studio and turn that tension off. It was a very traumatic time for some of us, and not one I'd like to repeat.''

That's why we love Simon. : )

Crystal Castles interview

"Hi, just to let you know that Zane Lowe played Not in Love and interviewed Crystal Castles about it on his BBC Radio 1 show last tuesday. He describes it as 'amazing' and 'one of the most brilliant tunes of the year'. It's an interview with CC rather than RS but it does explain how they came together, and they do talk about RS a lot! You can listen here - it's 29 minutes in. Availible worldwide I think but only until Tuesday." (Thanks Danny)

Update: Download the segment here. "It now includes both Zane Lowe segments and a Fearne Cotton Radio 1 part where she speaks of the song." (Thanks Aaron)

And if you don't have the track yet, you can get it at Slicing Up Eyeballs and Stereogum. I love to see all of the praise it's getting. (Thanks SUE and Lars)

Update: It's up on Youtube! Loving it so far. (Thanks Aaron)

From NME: "The Cure's Robert Smith has lent his vocals to the new single by Crystal Castles. The Toronto digi-dance duo are releasing a new version of 'Not In Love' on December 6, with Smith on singing duties. The original version of the song features on the band's self-titled second album, released in May."
(Thanks Aaron)

Prefix and Gigwise also have articles about this. (Thanks Kate)

Update: You can read the lyrics to the song here and watch a video for the original version here.

Paul Banks on The Cure

Paul Banks of Interpol talks about the influence The Cure had on his band, in the Oct. issue of Blitz:

What about The Cure, especially on albums like Pornography or Disintegration? Didn't they influence Interpol?

"The Cure is the band that all of us in Interpol can say influenced us. When I was younger I listened to them a lot. Carlos as well. Actually, he took a straight influence from this band on the way he played the bass and the keys. To me, Robert Smith is also one of these examples: you can't be Robert Smith if you're not Robert Smith. It's one of the bands with the deepest influence on Interpol, because we all like them. They're legendary." (Thanks to Hazey Jane on the Interpol forum for posting the translation)

Cure FM 2nd broadcast

Listen to, and/or download, the second broadcast of Cure FM from Oct. 6th, 1990 at Slicing Up Eyeballs. And here's a transcript of the show. (Thanks Andy)

Washington, D.C. 84 complete soundboard

"As most people know Washington, D.C. 1984 commonly circulates as the official COLD bootleg, however the last 5 minutes or so of the last song Forever is cut, the bootleg also has a small cut in A Forest keyboard/guitar intro.

Wolfgang's Vault acquired Bill Graham Presents master recordings some years ago and has the complete uncut show streaming as low bitrate MP3, unfortunately for non-members the amount it allows you to play per month is extremely limited. However if you buy a 1 year membership for $48 you can access the whole show as 192kbps MP3.

*It's the 2nd last show of The Top Tour 1984, and is just Boris Williams' 8th show with the band, he'd only been with the band 10 days when they played this show!" (Thanks Brent)

The RS BLIM mystery

BLIM
Finally something interesting in Cure world. Well, maybe. Robert posted this photo on his MySpace page 2 days ago, titled BLIM. Who/what is BLIM? What does it mean (Boy Lost In Music? Bunny Lake Is Missing?)? A piece of the next puzzle, perhaps? Or just something random Robert wanted to post?
(Thanks to Aaron for finding it)

Update: Just solved part of it. The image is from the movie poster for Bunny Lake Is Missing. But why has he posted it?

Sean Penn as Robert Smith?

Update: "The director of the movie is Paolo Sorrentino. In an interview he said that for the rock star character played by Sean Penn, the inspiration was Robert Smith, leader of The Cure. "When he came to Rome, I went to see him in concert. Lipstick on the lips, punk hair, fifteen-year-old look and he is 50 years old instead. He doesn't have a cell phone, he doesn't drive a car, he has stopped the time to 1988." (Thanks fmjews)

From The Daily Mail: "with his red lipstick and wild hair, Penn looked more like 51-year-old Cure frontman Robert Smith than a Hollywood actor as he filmed on location in Dublin's Mount Street." Here's another photo, and here's another.

Lol Tolhurst on Part Time Punks (08-19-10) by CraigatCoF

Thanks to Michael Stock, host of Part Time Punks on KXLU 88.9 FM in L.A. every Thursday from 3-6pm, we now have the full audio of Lol Tolhurst's appearance on last week's show. If you're looking for Lol's comments about his proposal of playing some live 'Faith' shows, that's at 167:23. Lol also debuted a new Levinhurst song, 'Seeds are Sown', at 118:17. It was a great interview, with lots of great tracks and stories about the early Cure days, so thanks again to Lol and Michael for doing it, and for sending in the audio. Also, check the comments for the playlist of the show.

CoS reports on Lol's Cure update

Consequence of Sound has a story about Lol's Cure news update on Part Time Punks. (Thanks Kate)

To clarify something, Lol has no news about 'In Orange'. He said he was mistaken when he was talking about that. Robert only mentioned the 'Mixed Up' remaster and the Cure at the BBC set.

Update: The Guardian is running a story about this, too. But before anyone gets too excited, please remember that this is simply a proposal made to Robert by Lol. No indication yet that this will actually happen. (Thanks Keith)

And as Lol correctly points out - "
The Guardian's headline is a little misleading! I have not asked RS to rejoin the Cure! I have my thing he has his..."

Sunday, August 22, 2010

Lol on Part Time Punks

Update 2 (from Lol): "Just realized looking thru my recent emails from Robert he tells me that he's working on the Cure at the BBC and mixed up remaster..oops! Not Cure In Orange as previously reported! But anyway the dvd of it should be out soon enough...."

Update:
Michael hopes to post the audio from the show soon, but until then, here are a few highlights - Lol said that Robert told him that work continues on The Cure @ the BBC box set and that it should be out next year. Same goes for the deuxe edition of Mixed Up. He also emailed Robert recently about the possibility of playing some shows together next year for the 30th anniversary of 'Faith', with the original lineup, and says the ball is now in Robert's court.

A reminder about Lol being on Part Time Punks today: "Lol Tolhurst will be on my Part Time Punks radio show today from 3-6pm P.S.T. on KXLU 88.9FM in Los Angeles. He promises to bring rare tracks by The Cure, Levinhurst, The Presence as well as some weird and rare tracks from his extensive collection of electronic music (which dates back to 1930)." (Thanks Michael)

"Yesterday on French TV channel France 3 there was a program called "the madness of the 80's", a collection of the most memorable events in music/fashion/politics etc.. and they showed about 8 seconds of The Cure. First they were lying on a bed doing a kind of a capella version of Close to Me with Simon singing the bass line, Boris clapping his hands and Porl singing the keyboard part. Then they showed a few seconds of The Cure on stage with Bananarama."(Thanks Sylvain)

Interpolnews on Twitter

I felt bad about forcing Cure fans to keep getting Interpol updates on my @CraigatCoF Twitter account, so I've created a new one just for Interpol stuff - @Interpolnews. So if you want Interpol news via Twitter, follow me there. The other account goes back to just Cure now, with only a few off topic posts every now and then. And if you missed it before, my Interpol blog is at Public Perversions. So until The Cure gets rolling again, and they WILL, so don't lose faith in them, that's what I'll be doing.

However, I have an eight page story which finishes with a rather big twist involving a Cure record that I’m looking for an illustrator for! I’m wondering if there are any big Cure fans with some skills in comic book illustrating that may wish to come on board?"

"Take the June 18th date down. The latest from the stores is it's been put on back order as the record company has now run out of stock...among other stories. I've heard so many of them now.
